What exactly does Smalur do?
Smalur takes any URL and maps it to a smaller one. For example, say you have some long URL like http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000FI73M…, using Smalur, you can turn it into something like http://smalur.com/z. Anytime anyone uses this new link, smalur instantly and seamlessly redirects them to the original URL.
Why would I want to use Smalur?
- To shorten long URLs in blog posts, comments, emails or IMs.
- To make a URL easy to read over the phone or voice chat.
- To hide the source of a URL (don’t be evil).
Are there any strings attached?
Nope.
OK mostly. If we receive complaints of Smalur URLs being used in SPAM, we will block them. Also, no redirecting to other redirect sites.
How does Smalur work?
When a URL is submitted to Smalur, we store it in our database and map it to a unique key. When someone uses a Smalur URL we look up the original URL in the database based on the URL key and quickly redirect the user.
Are Smalur URLs case-sensitive?
Yes. Although the domain (smalur.com) is not, the url key (the part after smalur.com) is case-sensitive. Making URLs case sensitive allows us to keep our URLs shorter.
Can I choose my own Smalur URL?
As of now, you cannot.
Why did you make Smalur?
Because Smalur is free and doesn’t show ads, we never had any delusions about making money. We did it because we thought it would be fun, and it’s a nice addition to our web portfolio.
